Camera Sika: Film at the heart of young people’s learning
British Council hosts a one-day event for schools to experience young films.
British Council Nepal hosted a school event to showcase the impact of films and filmmaking on pupils’ understanding of complex challenges like inclusion and climate change. Camera Sika: Learning Through Films event took place on 9 June 2023, at the Film Development Board office in Chabahil, Kathmandu.
Since 2019, the British Council has been working with organisations in Nepal and the UK to encourage the use of films among young people (under 18s) by training mentors, developing resources for educators/students and creating annual calls for films. Camera Sika workshops, grants and awards have reached schools across Nepal through a mix of digital and physical offers. It has helped 2000 students learn new skills so that they can independently participate in important social discussions of our times. To date, young people, schools and our mentors have worked with us to create a catalogue of over 50 films which have been recognised for their craft, storytelling and social relevancy. Films made by young people for Camera Sika’s annual call (since 2021) have reached more than 4 million people in Nepal and abroad, including at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP) 26 and 27.
Friday’s programme invites 180 students and over 20 educators to participate in thematic sessions intended to introduce Camera Sika methodologies, resources and impact to the audience. British Council hopes by showcasing the films can create a better understanding of how films can be an effective pedagogical tool/resource and platform for young minds. And hopes educators and students continue to engage with film in the future for improved learning and development outcomes.
During the event, B, British Council and its partners will be awarding three winners of the recent Young Films 2023 campaign on social media where 10 films made by young people from various provinces competed for exciting rewards. Selected films were made on cultural heritage protection, climate change and inclusion themes.
