Karina Patel, a student from Gadhimai Municipality, Rautahat, has been a GEMS Peer Group Leader (PGL) since 2022. Coming from a family of six, she is the daughter of a teacher whose frequent work-related travels leave her with significant responsibilities at home. Despite these challenges, Karina is determined to pursue a career in medicine. However, in her community, she has primarily seen women in nursing roles rather than as doctors.
Her perspective changed when she encountered a female doctor character in the EDGE curriculum. Learning that many female patients feel more comfortable discussing their health concerns with women doctors strengthened her resolve to enter the medical field.
Beyond her medical aspirations, Karina has expanded her knowledge through the GEMS Club. “I’ve learned about various professions, including computer coding, entrepreneurship, and accounting. I was also introduced to women pioneers like Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer. This exposure helped me think seriously about my career after SEE,” she shares.
As part of the GEMS Club, Karina has developed digital skills that set her apart. “We explore educational websites like Coursera and TED-Ed and learn to create PowerPoint presentations. Many of my friends outside the club aren’t familiar with these skills, so I help them in computer class with internet navigation and Microsoft programs,” she explains.
Her father, Krishna Patel, acknowledges the profound impact of the GEMS Club on her development. “Karina has always been a dedicated student, but her participation in the Salesh Baba Community Learning Centre as a PGL has enhanced her education and personal growth. Her leadership and digital skills have improved remarkably,” he says.
Karina says, “I primarily use English to facilitate club activities and actively encourage other members. Reflecting on my early days in the club, I recall struggling with basic laptop use. Today, I can confidently address societal issues like dowry practices, child marriage, and child rights, advocating for social justice, and I openly discuss adolescent sexual health, safeguarding against abuse—both online and offline—and the importance of empowering young girls in their communities with other PGLs in the club”.
